Walking & Cycling Information

Grading of Walks and Rides

The activities program includes a range of activities to suit most levels of fitness, age and interests. The grading system will allow you to identify activities that best suit you. Begin with easier day walks or cycle rides to discover your capabilities. Brisk walking or cycling including hills several times a week is the best preparation.

All walks and cycle rides are graded using three variables, distance - terrain - height gain (the total of all uphill sections).

Bushwalks

Distance:

S-short (under 12 km/day):

M-medium (12-20 km/day)

L-long (over 20 km/day)

Terrain:

E-easy (fire trails, tracks, beaches, open bushland)

M-medium (some scrub, alpine heath, rough tracks)

R-rough (very scrubby, significant climbing, rocky scrambling)

W-wet (compulsory swims, river crossings, canyoning, often cold)

Cycle Rides

Distance:

S-short (under 25 km/day):

M-medium (25-50 km/day)

L-long (over 50 km/day)

Terrain:

E-easy (cycleways, sealed roads)

M-medium (unsealed roads, fire trails)

R-rough (rocky fire trails, cross country)

A walk rated S-M-600: is under 12 km/day, some scrub and / or rough tracks, 600 metre total height gain. Some elements can be unpredictable such as weather, vegetation changes due to fire or re-growth, illness and accident.

A cycle rated S-M-600: is under 25 km/day, on unsealed roads or fire trails, 600 metre total height gain. Some elements can be unpredictable such as weather, surface condition, illness and accident.
