Activity Program

Newcastle Bushwalking Club (NBC) arranges a program of activities for our members including Bushwalking, Cycling, and Kayaking. Our activities include both day walks and overnight walks and also extended walks within Australia.

Persons considering joining the club, and member’s guests, can participate as visitors in up to three activities at no cost before joining..

COVID vaccination certificates are only required for activities requiring car shuffles as indicated on the program, and all trips away.

When attending please ensure you comply with the following social distancing requirements:
  • If car shuffles/sharing or public transport is required it will be stated in the program. Please bring a mask to wear when in other people's cars or on public transport.
  • Do not attend if you have COVID-19 or have the symptoms of COVID-19 or are generally unwell.
  • Maintain a 1.5m gap from others on the walk at all times (except members of your own household).


Newcastle Bushwalking Club acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia, and acknowledges and respects their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging, and acknowledge their custodianship of the Country in which we engage our bushwalking and related activities.

Bookings are required for all activities by 2 days prior to the activity - unless a start TIME is shown in which case members may simply turn up. Visitors should always contact the leader before attending - even when booking is not required.


Visitors are always required to book first with the leader.

Visitors will be required to read and sign an Acknowledgement of Risks and Obligations at each activity. For details click here

Club Trip to Blue Mountains

First activity day is Mon 27 Jun 2022. 5 days of fun for walkers and sightseers. For NBC members and their partners/guests as permissible. The Blue Mountains region offers many walks of differing lengths & grades and many great sightseeing opportunities. Choose your own accommodation and length of stay. The suggested accommodation is Blackheath Glen Tourist Park. Itinerary will be decided to give options for all attending by dividing into smaller groups. Maroubra to Bondi Coastal Walk. 12km. Undulating walk past Sydney’s eastern beaches and headlands with spectacular views. Express train to Central, bus to Maroubra and return from Bondi by train. Grade M-E-275. Requires public transport to complete. SORRY - THIS WALK HAS BEEN CANCELLED. HEAVY RAIN FORECAST, RISK OF TRAIN DISRUPTION AND FEW PEOPLE BOOKED IN - WILL RESCHEDULE FOR THE SPRING PROGRAM.

Rogaining at Wangi. Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross-country navigation, in which teams of two to five people visit as many checkpoints as they wish in a set time period. This activity will provide you with an introduction to Rogaining in an area where you can’t get lost. The activity includes an hour of training then you can give it a try. Lemon tree passage. Meeting at Tanilba Foreshore Hall we will walk along the foreshore through Tilligerry Habitat boardwalk to Mallabula Point and around to Lemon Tree Passage. The return leg will be via the Newcastle Weather radar station and an alternate track through Tilligerry Habitat. The walk will mainly follow formed grassy, gravel tracks with a gentle climb to the weather radar. The section of the walk along the foreshore will be tidal dependent though access should still allow us to access the water front section of Port Stephens marine sanctuary.

Eleebana to Wallsend. 30km. Ride to Speers Point, Glendale, Wallsend and return. Starting from boat ramp car park Macquarie Drive Eleebana at 9am. Grade M-E-250.

Overnight Walk. Carey’s Peak. Friday evening walk to Careys Peak. Sat, walk to the swamps and return to Selby hut. Sun, explore and return. About 32 kms 900+m gain. Must be prepared for very cold conditions, possibly snow. Limited Numbers.

Feature Night

Presentation – Hidden Beneath Newcastle

Join us at the Central Charlestown Leagues Club (8 Bula St) for our monthly feature night which starts at 7:30pm. This month we have an interesting presentation on some of the historical and other findings which resulted from the excavations associated with the closure of the main train line into the city.

Join us at 6:30pm for dinner at the bistro if you wish.

Bike Ride - Mount Sugarloaf. Approx. 30km. Ride along the Sugarloaf Range to Mount Vincent and return Meet 9 am in the car park at Mount Sugarloaf. Bring a chair and morning tea. This will be a mountain bike ride and not suitable for narrow tyres.

Bike Ride Myuna Bay to Dora Creek. 25km Ride to Eraring and Dora Creek via Power Station inlet and outlet canals. Short section of rough track but can be bypassed. Start at Myuna Bay Picnic area (gravel access road just south). Grade M-M-200


Sat 23rd Jul 2022

Big Rocky to Fingal Bay and return (and Stephens Peak). 17 km. Meet at the turn off to Big Rocky, junction Big Rocky Track and Gan Gan Rd, One Mile (1.6 km north of Frost Rd). Bring lunch. Map Morna Point 1:25,000. Grade M-E-240

Cardiff to Newcastle via GNW 20km.

Meet at Cardiff Station and follow Winding Creek and the GNW, Yeularbah track to Newcastle. Creek gullies, waterfall, coastal views. Catch the light rail and train back to Cardiff. Bring morning tea and lunch.

Grade M-E-400. Requires public transport to complete.

NBC Trip - Central West Cycle Trail cycle tour

Fri 14th to Thurs 20th October

5 days of trail cycling plus 2 days in Dubbo.

Suitable for confident cyclists with off road capability bikes. Terrain is mixed road/ gravel track. There are flexible options available re accommodation enroute, distances and routes.

Please contact the leader. You will be sent an information pack to help in your decision to commit to the week, then there will be a planning session held.

NBC weekend trip to Coonabarabran to do some walks in the Warrumbungle National Park.

Fri 21st Oct to Sun 23rd Oct

The itinerary is:

Afternoon/evening Fri 21st Oct – travel to Coonabarabran approx. 4.5hrs drive.

Sat 22nd Oct – Breadknife & Grand High Tops loop walk including a side trip to Bluff Mountain – 17km – 800m ascent approx. 6 hours. This walk has spectacular views from several locations and is National Parks G4.

Sun 23rd Oct – morning walk to Split Rock – 5km – 350m ascent – approx. 3hrs – loop with a steep climb to another spectacular lookout. National Parks G4

Sun 23rd Oct – after lunch visit Siding Springs observatory (approx. 1- 1.5hrs) before driving back to Newcastle (4.5hrs)

We plan to stay in town at one of the 2 caravan parks on Fri and Sat nights. It is about a 30 minute drive from town to the start of the walks.

Six day kayak circumnavigation of Myall Lakes. Currently Myall Lakes conditions are unsuitable for this trip. We will advise the new date when it is known - likely to be after Sept.
